Editor’s Note From Rivera Sun
This week, as 78,000 children were forced to flee their homes in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and as thousands of eyes turned toward the Africa World Cup, the Congolese soccer team engaged in a dramatic protest. With one hand, they covered their mouths; with the other, they made the gesture of a gun pointed at their heads. The protest hopes to galvanize viewers to break their silence and pressure political leaders to address the outstanding economic, political, and social problems that have led to extreme violence between the Congolese army and the M23 armed group. ‘Use the same energy that you put into talking about the Nations Cup to highlight what is happening with us. There are no small gestures,’ DRC striker Cedric Bakambu wrote on social media.
It’s a powerful message to the whole world to pay attention to the suffering happening in so many countries. Sudan, Yemen, Afghanistan, Niger, Myanmar (among others) deserve our attention along with Israel/Palestine and Ukraine. As the soccer players point out … if we have time for sports games (ahem, Super Bowl Sunday), then we have time for compassion, justice, and peace, too.
In more Nonviolence News, 300,000 workers went on strike in Finland, emptying the capital city of Helsinki. In Kenya, thousands of women took part in a march against femicide. Mexicans also demonstrated against femicide, especially the murder of a trans woman, and the broader targeting of transgender individuals. Myanmar held major protests on the third anniversary of the military coup.
Here’s some good news: Argentina’s general strike played a significant role in a court ruling that stopped President Milei’s ‘mega-decree’. Across the United States, non-police crisis response teams have been working, replacing emergency calls with unarmed – but better trained – crisis responders. And a major Dutch investment firm has divested from fossil fuel companies. Interestingly, they had made this commitment two years ago, but took the time to try to help their portfolio of energy companies make a shift to renewable energy sources. The investment firm still backs the companies that are transitioning, but the companies that did not make changes were dropped.
Actions for a ceasefire in Gaza are getting more pinpointed and strategic. Jewish Voices For Peace held 15 “Shabbat For A Ceasefire” actions. And blockades took place at President Biden’s motorcade, the Chevron oil refinery in California, an Israeli intelligence firm in Canada, a weapons facility in Australia, a shipping facility in New Zealand, and other places. The city of Chicago passed a ceasefire resolution, along with Cambridge, MA. McDonalds and Starbucks are feeling the heat of a boycott over their pro-Israel stance.
There are many other intriguing stories in this week’s Nonviolence News. Some are highly creative, like the recycled material giant trolls or DIY bus benches. Others are intensely courageous, like the Lakota activist who locked herself to a helicopter to stop pipeline workers from reaching a remote section of construction. I hope you find plenty of inspiration for action in these stories.
