Editor’s Note From Rivera Sun
As the violence in Gaza continues, peace activists around the world are increasing their calls for a ceasefire. Notably, Jewish Voices For Peace and If Not Now held the largest civil disobedience of American Jews on behalf of Palestine in US history. Ten thousand people rallied while 500 Jews, rabbis, and descendants of Holocaust survivors were arrested inside the US Capitol Building. One public official has resigned over ‘destructive, unjust’ arms transfers to Israel and numerous other protest actions are happening. Internationally, Italian dockworkers are refusing to load weapons shipments headed to the country, and a general strike was held in several countries in support of ending the violence.
In other news, Guatemala is still gripped by a roadblocks and a general strike opposing the far-rights efforts to subvert the recent electoral results. Indigenous Australians are grieving the defeat of the historic “Voice to Parliament” vote, calling for a week of silence in protest and warning that the failure will set back decades-long reconciliation efforts. Hundreds rallied in Canada as part of a growing surge of support for First Nations, particularly around sovereignty, ending fossil fuel pipelines and denouncing colonial violence.
Some success stories this week: Kaiser health care workers held a 3-day strike and won 21% raises and guarantees to fill a critical staffing shortage. Columbus, OH, is wiping out $335 million of medical debt for the city’s poorest residents. A California childcare union led largely by immigrants and women of color won living wages.
By the way, the infamous Yes Men – social justice spoofers, extraordinaire – have released a new video. In it, they pose as Apple execs and announce the ‘iphone to end all iphones, the last iphone you’ll ever need’. In mocking planned obsolesce, they point out that the tech industry could build things to last, allow for the ‘right to repair’, and make a better product for people.
In solidarity,
Rivera Sun
